Recent listeners to Radio Four will have heard the ‘You and Yours’ programme do two magazine items on peak oil:
- 18 September 2008, 10 minutes, gives a brief introduction to peak oil
- 25 September 2008, 13 minutes, talks about the impact of peak oil, the potential need for population control(!), the [complete lack of] government response, and the need for big action fast
Thanks to Paul Whewell from the Farnham Local Food Initiative for telling us about these.
This article from the New Economics Foundation proposes what the government should be doing in response to the “three overlapping events” of climate change, peak oil, and the credit crunch which “threaten to develop into a perfect storm, the like of which has not been seen since the Great Depression”.
Thanks also to Ichin Cheng for sending through this recent article published by the “Forum for the Future”, which talks about the Transition movement, and suggests that Transition Initiatives may be “like the first weeds that push up through the concrete, opening a crack for something much bigger to follow through in its wake.”
Interesting… I’d never thought of myself as a weed pushing up through concrete before! :-)
