Dun spendin’ — Eco homes go mainstream

“Imagine if you never had to pay another electricity, gas, water or mortgage bill ever again.

“For most cash-strapped home-owners stretched by the financial crisis and soaring utility charges, it sounds bliss.

“But for Nigel Lowthrop and his family, this idyllic existence is a reality. They live in the ultimate credit crunch-proof house, which uses no mains gas, water or electricity. ”

This is the start of a story which appeared in The Sun on 23 January. It explains how the family buy one bottle of gas for their cooker every six weeks, and the only ‘normal’ bills they pay are phone and council tax.

The paper has eight million readers and in 2006 its website registered 1.2 billion page impressions.

Eco-homes are now truly mainstream.
