Meeting with Lesley Harding, managing Surrey Climate Team

Surrey CC meetingYesterday representatives of Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere’s Transition Towns met Lesley Harding, manager of Surrey County Council’s climate change team.

A visiting representative of Transition The Gap in Brisbane, Australia also attended!

Lesley explained how the council is working with local authorities across Surrey to meet government targets to:

1) reduce the councils’ own carbon emissions
2) reduce emissions of all businesses and households within the county

These targets are know as National Indicators 185 and 186.

At present the council has formed the group to work on these targets but does not yet have a clear plan of how to achieve them. The aim is to demonstrate leadership in carbon reduction, by showing and enabling others to cut emissions, rather than telling people what to do.

We discussed the work of the three three Transition Towns and the results we have achieved so far. We also talked about and ways in which we might potentially cooperate in the future and agreed to meet again as the Surrey plan became clearer.
