Edward Burtynsky photographs the landscape of oil

Thanks to Catherine Wiley for her post on the noticeboard last week for this TED talk about using art to show the impact or our use of oil.

It’s just over three minutes long and is best viewed in full screen.

Two quotes that stick with me are:

“Every litre that we put in our fuel tanks took 23 metric tonnes of organic matter to produce.”

and

“We all now need to start using our talents to deal with what I think is probably one of the most challenging issues of our time… so that in 30 or 40 years time we can look at our children and say “We did everything we possibly humanly could.”
