In 1956 the Government passed the Clean Air Act. Its aim was to reduce the polluting emissions that caused the London smogs, including the ‘Great Smog’ of 1952 which caused an estimated 12,000 deaths.
In 2008 the Government passed the Climate Change Act. Its aim is to reduce the CO2 emissions that cause Climate Change, and its target is that by 2050 we should have cut CO2 emissions to 80% of the levels we were emitting in 1990.
That means that by 2050 the energy we used on an average Monday in 1990 will have to last us till Friday. The energy we used by 10 o’clock on Saturday morning will have to last us all weekend.
It seems impossible, doesn’t it?
But here are some photos of a building in Australia that has already been designed, built and is being used, and which uses 82% less energy (to design, build, and operate) than its conventional counterparts. It uses much less water too.
