Apparently Surrey County Council’s composting programme, started in April, has been getting some great results.
Surrey residents have snapped up almost 3,000 of the cut-price bins which are expected to save more than 1,000 tonnes of food and garden waste from landfill each year. This is good for the planet, and good for our gardens.
It is good for our pockets too. Out of a total of 536,000 tonnes of household waste currently produced in Surrey each year, it’s estimated that around a third could be composted. So we still have about 177,000 tonnes to go!! But if we did then we would save an estimated £8.7 million in reduced landfill and green waste disposal costs each year.
I know I’d like to have £8.7m off my council tax bill!!
