The government of the Philippines “is embarking on a massive greening program aimed at reducing poverty in the countryside while ensuring food security, biodiversity conservation and address climate change.”
“President Aquino wants to grow back the lost forest cover of the country”, said Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje.
The goal is to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares before the end of 2016. This is more than twice what the government has achieved in the past 25 years.
Good News also from Hugh’s Fish Fight: Princes, the largest tinned tuna supplier in the UK, have committed to making dramatic changes and have announced that by 2014 (three years) all their tinned tuna will be caught by Pole and Line, or FAD-free purse-seine nets.
