A cheerful thought

Here’s a cheerful thought. Why do civilisations collapse?

This chap reckons there are five common reasons, all interlinked:

  1. When the people destroy the natural environment that they live in
  2. When climate changes
  3. When links with friendly neighbours break down
  4. When relationships with enemies worsen
  5. When people fail to change outdated political and cultural practices that worked well in the past but do not match the new realities

And the good news is that “all the major threats facing us today are problems entirely of our own making, and since we made the problems we can also solve the problems.”
