Today we met Jo and Chris who look after the Allotmore Project in Godalming. This is a new, modern approach to allotment gardening designed for people who want to grow their own fruit and veg, but haven’t the time for traditional allotment gardening. For £25 a month you get your plot, use of tools, greenhouse and composting plus plenty of socialising with a calendar of events throughout the year.
Just over an acre of land has been divided up into relatively small plots which don’t overwhelm the novice and support is provided by Jo and Chris with watering and weeding when the plot-holder is away. The plots are prepared ready for planting and manuring is done by pigs in rotation on fallow land. There are also goats, hens and ducks; bees too, I believe. Christmas turkeys were reared and the pork is sold to the plot holders.
The layout of the site is attractive with a little club house, a gazebo seating area, a pizza oven and boules pitch. All very delightful and well maintained by Jo and Chris, who live practically on site.
